I would love to be able to see how many people are cloning my repositories and when.

Yes. would be very interesting. Would really help me have the motivation to update stuff that I know people use.

Also adding in Download (.tar.gz) statistics would be great.

Will it be retro active? IE: will we get all the old data, or will it
start tracking soon?

Unfortunately it won't be retro active. If had the ability to track these stats (specifically `git clone`) from day 1, we totally would have.

Locality statistics for downloads/cloning would be excellent, too.
I currently do this for svn checkouts by unique ips based on the geoips gem and then chart 'em up by country. Fun to see. I would link to the display, but it is butt ugly and only "good enough for me".
At any rate, I have some down and dirty rake tasks for parsing nginx logs and sticking them in a CheckoutIp model with a country code attribute if that is at all handy. The main thing I would think that is of interest is the geo ip bit.
Cheers,
Walter
