'Deploy Keys' needs some documentation

In the config edit page for a private repo, there is a config section entitled 'Deploy Keys', and a link that says "Need help with public keys?", but which doesn't describe the intended use of the 'Deploy Keys' feature. It would be cool to know exactly what the benefits and restrictions of the deploy keys are, exactly.
Specifically, is access to the repo guaranteed read-only for deploy keys? I could test it, but I can't rely on the state revealed by my testing being guaranteed behaviour rather than just incidental and subject to change in the future.
