Oh, I get what's going on now.
Unfortunately this is how the system is setup - file extensions determine the syntax highlighting. I don't see this changing in the near future.

Now sure how practical this is, but could it check the first line of the file, and if it's a shbang (#!/bin/sh or #!/usr/bin/env sh or #!/usr/bin/env python etc) set the syntax to that?
