Left angle brackets '<' being converted to escaped version in README's

It appears that only the left angle brackets are being converted to their escaped entity version. So in README's (at least for the rdoc format, maybe others) instead of seeing:
<
I see
<
This prevents for example, copying and pasting code from a readme. It is also very annoying for the reader... :-)

- → Tag changed from “bug” to “bug rdoc”
